FAQs about hot tubs

Before you buy a hot tub, it’s a good idea to find out as much information as you can about its uses, benefits, and maintenance.

Here at Red Rock Spas, we are often asked many questions about hot tubs, and here are some of the most common ones.

What are the health benefits of hot tubs?

Soaking in a hot tub has many health benefits including stress relief, muscle relaxation, pain relief, improved sleep, and improved cardiovascular health.

What do I need to prepare for my hot tub installation?

All you need to get ready for your hot tub installation is a level base with proper foundation, a power source, and a hose to fill it with. Depending on where you live, you may have other needs that must be met based on building codes, etc. Proper foundation types can include a deck, pavers and concrete, or an in-ground installation.

What is the best foundation for a hot tub?

A concrete base is the best foundation for a hot tub because it’s strong and long-lasting. A hot tub may also be installed on a deck providing that it is level and solid. You can also purchase a pre-made hot tub foundation.

How many people can fit inside a hot tub?

Hot tubs come in three sizes. A small hot tub will hold 2-4 people. A medium hot tub will hold 5-6 people, and a large hot tub will be perfect for 7 (or more) people!

What temperature should a hot tub be?

Most people prefer a water temperature around 100°F-102°F. The maximum temperature is 104°F. If you have kids younger than 5, they shouldn’t be in a hot tub over 95°F, and for no longer than 10 minutes at a time.

How long can I stay inside a hot tub?

Ideally, your hot tub sessions should last between 20 and 30 minutes. If the water temperature is no higher than 100°F and you are in good health, you can enjoy your spa time for up to 45 minutes.

Can I use a hot tub if I’m pregnant?

You can use a hot tub if you are pregnant, but medical experts recommend sticking to 10 minutes max each time. If you’re pregnant and looking to soak in a hot tub, we suggest that you first speak with your doctor to ensure that it is the right choice for your health.

How often should I drain and clean my hot tub?

We recommend draining your hot tub completely three or four times each year. It’s not complicated, and it only takes about an hour to get the water out. So that’s only four hours a year to keep your hot tub safe and clean.

How often should I test and clean my hot tub water?

If your hot tub is getting a lot of use, you should test it every 3-4 days. This includes checking the water for cloudiness, discoloration of the water, or filmy residue on the surface of the water. You should also use test strips to check the water’s chemical levels. You will need to test the following:

  • Bromine or chlorine
  • Alkalinity
  • Calcium hardness
  • pH levels

Water two hours after adding each chemical to the water. This will prevent negative chemical reactions.
